QUEEN CREEK — What was a tight game in the first half turned into a convincing win for the Poston Butte Broncos, who took down the Benjamin Franklin Chargers 40-13 Friday night.
With the score knotted at seven at halftime the Broncos turned to running back Gavin Thrower who rambled for more than 100 yards in the third quarter alone while scoring three of his five touchdowns on the night, including a 65-yard touchdown run in which he broke numerous tackles to put the Broncos up 14-7.
On the Broncos' next possession Thrower rambled up the middle for 24 yards to increase the lead to 20-7.
On the Chargers’ first possession and its fourth play from scrimmage Carlos Madrid broke loose down the left sideline for a 45-yard touchdown run to score first.
The Broncos struck right back on a two-yard touchdown run by Thrower with the big play on the drive being a 31-yard run from quarterback Mason Lloyd that put them in the red zone.
The Chargers only score in the second half was provided by the defense on a fumble that was scooped up and returned to the one-yard line where lineman James Shelbourn barreled over from there to cut the lead to 33-13.
With about a minute to go Jakhi Robertson broke loose on a 73-yard touchdown run to end the scoring.
Throughout the game, especially in the second half, the Chargers had difficulty in moving the ball.
Both offenses were stymied in the first half, turning the ball over repeatedly on downs.
Robertson picked off Chargers' quarterback Ridge Allen twice to end Chargers' drives in the first half.
Poston Butte Coach Dain Thompson told his team at halftime they were not playing Broncos’ football and were not matching the intensity of the Chargers.
He said it was nice to see his team respond in the second half after playing such a bad first half.
