Combs football helmet

The Combs Coyotes football helmet was the winner of the AZ Helmet Challenge, voted by fans as the best helmet in Arizona. Combs now advances to the national competition.

SAN TAN VALLEY — The Buena High School Colts from Sierra Vista made the trek to Combs High School to hand their hosts a 33-20 loss.

Senior running back Joey Jensen scored the Coyotes’ touchdowns, two rushing and one receiving. The score was 27-13 at the half.

“I think our defense did really well,” Combs coach Travis Miller said. “Our offense had the ability to move the ball and score, but we just shot ourselves in the foot one too many times — some mental errors.”

Miller said the Coyotes, a 4A school, appreciated the chance to play the 5A Colts “and have some quality competition.”

Combs was originally scheduled to play Caave Creek Cactus Shadows, but that game was canceled Tuesday after a COVID-19 outbreak at Cactus Shadows that forced the football team into quarantine.
