SAN TAN VALLEY — The Combs Coyotes knew this was the part of their schedule where they needed to rack up some wins, and they are doing so in dominating fashion.
Their third straight win of at least 40 points came Friday night against Phoenix Cortez (0-7, 0-2 4A Black Canyon), where they rode an electrifying performance from quarterback Tre Buck and a stifling defense to a 49-0 victory to improve to 4-3, and 2-0 in region.
“We did what we planned on doing which is having our way on offense,” said Combs coach Travis Miller.
Buck managed to complete six touchdown passes in the first half alone before being rested for the entire second half. Two of those came to running back Joey Jensen, and a couple more to Deven Mock.
“One thing that really impresses me about Tre is that he spreads the ball out quite a bit.,” Miller said. “Multiple receivers these past few games have had a lot of yardage.”
But Miller said he might have been even more impressed with his team’s defense, which didn’t give up any positive yardage during that first half. The only first down they gave up, in fact, was on a penalty. There was a consistent supply of sacks to make sure Cortez never got moving forward.
“I always felt we’d be able to be this productive throughout the games,” Miller said. “Obviously the schedule was tougher earlier in the season than it has been recently, but we’ve been doing what we need to do.”
The Coyotes now need to get ready for a pivotal game against Glendale next week, one which they need to win to keep on pace to win the region.
“They’ve been winning some games. We respect what they do,” Miller said. “They throw the ball pretty well, so we have to be on our game and we’re actually really excited to hit the ground running to gameplan for them.”
