CASA GRANDE — The Rev. Carl Bengtson has taken the helm at Sonland Lutheran Church.
“Never lived in Arizona before. It’s hot here, even in October and dry,” Bengtson said to his congregation at the start of one his first sermons in Casa Grande.
Bengtson previously lived in Atlanta, Georgia which he said can be hot but has a semi-tropical climate.
Sonland Lutheran is a member church of the American Association of Lutheran Churches, an orthodox Lutheran organization with churches nationwide and sister churches in Europe and Africa.
“What we mean by orthodox is we believe the Bible is the inspired word of God without error and the sole standard by which we live and which shows us the way of salvation through Christ,” Bengtson said.
Bengston said he looks forward to leading the church.
“We are a vital part of the Christian community in Casa Grande and look forward to extending the ministry of the church to all people,” he said. “As Lutherans, we have been at the core of Christian proclamation for over 500 years.”
Sonland Lutheran Church is at 432 E. Ocotillo St. Services begin at 10 a.m. on Sundays. Bible study begins at 8:30 a.m.
“I may be new here, but we have been faithful to the scriptures and the Good news a long time as the church, and Sonland has been a beacon of light in the community,” he said.
