Certification of election results has been occurring around the country, including in Arizona. Despite the protests of President Trump and many supporters, the outcome is not in doubt, and the Electoral College soon will make Joe Biden the official president-elect.

The election was very close in a huge turnout. Arizona was extremely close, and Biden’s support overcame a win by Trump in Pinal County of nearly 32,000 votes.

Elections often are affected by unexpected things, but COVID-19 was one that turned the nation upside down. It hurt the economy and Trump, although recovery is on the way.

More analysis of the election will come, and it is needed. Some unusual aspects of the vote totals have been explained. One significant factor is the way Trump was hurt by the suburban vote.

The pandemic led to widespread mailing of ballots that were not solicited, which is much different than the system Arizona uses. That should not be repeated. While the election results appear to be mostly valid, elections are too important to be left open to potential fraud.
