Congress and President Trump at this writing appear to have an agreement that will prevent a government shutdown again this week. Most Americans certainly want that, and they should be able to expect their leaders to work together.
After a long shutdown recently, Democrats agreed to give Trump some of what he wants for a border barrier. There was some give and take and no one is thrilled, but that is the nature of compromise. Trump apparently will supplement the wall funding with a transfer of some money already budgeted. In fact, he reportedly already has started construction of a new barrier in Texas.
An opportunity remains for a bigger compromise on immigration that has eluded the government for decades. In the meantime, Trump is able to help the many government employees tasked with trying to stop smuggling of drugs and people. And that will benefit the nation.
The 2020 election is sure to be a test of opinion on this issue.
