Welcome to lame duck time in our national government. Members of the House and Senate who are retiring or who lost their bid for re-election maintain their seats since the new Congress does not meet until Jan. 3. The lame duck Congress could be providing needed funds for small businesses, the unemployed and desperate state governments, but instead argue over who is causing the delay in activity.
President Trump has opted to be a lame duck, having realized his defeat without actually conceding. He has provided no leadership to governors in dealing with the rising COVID-19 cases, nor to Congress to write legislation to ease financial burdens. He is still our president until Jan. 20, and we need an active, not lame duck, leader.
Vice President Pence has refused to become a lame duck, attending meetings and making public statements that he deems are needed. Recently he traveled to Cherokee County, Georgia (a northwest suburb of Atlanta) to motivate supporters to plan to vote in the upcoming senatorial runoff. He explained that a Democratic victory in both races would allow Democrats to control the Senate. This statement reveals that Pence knows that Joe Biden is the President-elect. With an evenly split Senate, the Democrats would only control the Senate if the vice president, to break the tie, was Kamala Harris.
A lame duck government is no excuse for inaction. Americans need the federal government to take actions now to assist those in financial need, individuals, governments and businesses. Delay is criminal.
Those readers who are supporters of the President should note that if you received requests, as I have, seeking donations to cover the Trump legal expenses in the effort to overthrow the election results, please read the fine print carefully. Reuters reported, “A large portion of the money goes to ‘Save America,’ a Trump leadership PAC, or political action committee, set up on Monday, and the Republican National Committee. Under Federal Election Commission rules, both groups have broad leeway in how they can use the funds. The Trump campaign, the RNC and Trump’s new Save America PAC did not respond to requests for comment.” In other words, your donations will NOT go to legal expenses but can be spent on whatever the RNC or Trump feel is justified.
