Editor, Casa Grande Dispatch:
Nobody likes the “Grim Reaper” but we all like American socialism. The 2020 election is not about socialism vs. capitalism though Trump and Mitch say it is. American socialism is an integral part of our mixed economy. A recent Social Security fact sheet published by the Social Security Administration noted that in 2019 about 64 million Americans would receive over $1 trillion in Social Security benefits. The same source indicated that retired workers alone in 2019 would receive over $65 billion a month. That’s $65 billion a month to be spent in local economies across the nation. Even staunch Trump supporters do not refuse their monthly checks. Businesses happily accept all the dollars Social Security recipients spend for goods and services.
Mr. Atchue’s excellent letter to the Casa Grande Dispatch (American socialism explained, Feb. 27) notes that we already enjoy many benefits of socialism. He says the following: “Public education, public roads, public utilities, Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid are a few examples of how public funding and cooperation work for the common good.”
Steel workers and construction workers and businesses that support them prosper with Trump-created government jobs as they build a hugely expensive and unnecessary wall across our southern border. (A Republican once told me that government doesn’t create jobs — hmmm?) American farmers are being bailed out by the American taxpayers. They take the $28 billion in “free stuff” and vote for Trump and his promise of more to come. These socialistic subsidies are the result of Trump’s own mismanaged capitalism. When capitalism fails us “Bigly” through corporate greed or mismanagement as it does today and did in 1929 and 2008 and through decades of huge wealth inequality, we all like American socialism.
