Editor, Casa Grande Dispatch:

I know how easily we can get either distracted or completely turned off by all the national political turmoil of today. Keeping our eye on the bread and butter issues impacting our daily lives gets tough, but it's a necessity to wade through the rubbish to know what's at stake.

Senior citizens and those on their way need to closely monitor Social Security and Medicare in the political realm. Those who suggest it's an entitlement program are often misleading politicians, led by special interest groups that intentionally use distortion to undermine these two successful American programs for their own benefit. Social Security is not an entitlement, it's a paid-into contract.

American workers and small businesses have paid into these trust funds over many decades. When benefits are paid, they are a fulfillment of a contract between the U.S. government and its citizens. We must not allow this trust to be handed over to Wall Street interests to become privatized and eventually diminished.

Arizona CD1 Congressman Tom O’Halleran has made an unequivocal commitment to protect the continued viability and success of Social Security and Medicare. This is a commitment to the economic and health care well-being of our nation's seniors. His efforts will help keep medical care and prescription costs down as well as provide economic dignity for those most vulnerable. Thank you, Congressman O’Halleran, for a job well done!
