Editor, Casa Grande Dispatch:

Cases of COVID-19 in Arizona are exploding and people have forgotten we are in the middle of a pandemic. Arizona's cases are the fastest growing in the country. I have a friend who was just diagnosed. Mask wearing has been proven to help prevent spread to another person. If we all wear a mask, it helps everyone. Nothing is perfect but if we must leave our home it does help. COVID's high mortality rate, around 5%, is very concerning, but what is more concerning are the stories and information coming from those who survive. The post-viral syndrome that lasts for weeks or months. The lasting kidney, heart and lung issues that may be permanent in many cases. Our lungs do not take kindly to ventilators and many suffer long-term lung issues. Those in the ICU long term may experience mental and physical problems including PTSD. Many COVID stays are not a quick in and out. And the hospital bills and copays even with good insurance may be very high.

Because I come from the medical community, I confer with colleagues who are busy working hard on the front lines. All they can say is this is real and it is very bad. They are begging you to take it seriously. This is not over, it will be many, many months if not years. Millions of lives will never be the same. We in the medical field are still learning so much and still have so many questions and not all the answers we seek. We don't have a lot of good treatments. Until we do, please do your part. Wear a mask. It's a very little thing. Now is the time to care about your neighbor.
