Editor, Casa Grande Dispatch:
This president does not understand that we cannot keep America safe by making the world a more dangerous place. Trump’s order to assassinate a top Iranian general had less to do with keeping America safe and more to do with his impeachment and controlling the headlines. With Congress reconvening and an impeachment trial gearing up, a strong White House diversion was inevitable.
Trump has proven he will do whatever it takes to avoid accountability for his actions. He continues to withhold evidence that he says proves he is innocent of abuse of power and obstruction of justice. An innocent president would use that evidence to clear his name and his legacy. He ordered this Iranian diversion to move impeachment to the back page and war to the front. That worked. Today we are talking about Iran instead of Ukraine. To save himself, Trump has set the stage for an unnecessary and unwinnable war that nobody will be able to control. This one has the potential to destroy our American way of life and the lives, families and property of countless others on a global scale. His intent was not to start a war or stop a war; it was to affect his own impeachment by creating a more serious crisis of the kind that traditionally has required everyone to rally around the president or be labeled as disloyal to America.
As our troops march off to another bloody and expensive quagmire, or worse, we call on our American Senate to accept its responsibility to make America and the world safer with a bipartisan vote to support the articles of impeachment and the removal of this president from office. We also call for support of House legislation to limit the war powers of all future presidents.
