Editor, Casa Grande Dispatch:
I feel the Dispatch editorial in last Sunday’s paper (Border security issue) needs a rebuttal.
When calling out Democrats for being obstructionist, the editorial fails to remind us of 2008. With the world and our nation facing a monumental economic crisis, the GOP made not reelecting president Obama their priority. Democrats took action and we still see the results in economic growth. With millions of Americans lacking access to affordable quality health care, Democrats singlehandedly took action resulting in record numbers of insured citizens with protections the GOP is still fighting to eliminate.
Why did Sunday’s editorial not mention the bipartisan “Gang of 8” immigration fix? The only reason this comprehensive measure failed to become law was due to the GOP House speaker’s lack of backbone — Paul Ryan wouldn’t even allow a vote.
Today’s so-called immigration crisis is one that Trump has created and exacerbated for political leverage. From attacking DACA, destroying families to defying Congress, Trump has shown himself to be an untrustworthy negotiator. In fact, it is becoming ever more clear that he and the GOP are complicit in keeping immigration an unresolved campaign issue. Every attempt to enter into real negotiations is thwarted by an unstable person watching Fox News.
Democrats do not favor open unsecured borders. Democrats want an immigration policy based on what’s in the overall best interest of the United States, while maintaining the American values we all treasure. Please keep your mind open to facts — do not allow your vision to be blinded by myths.
