Editor, Casa Grande Dispatch:
Though I haven’t read anything about it locally, a new wrinkle in the health care situation has attracted attention in several places. The issue has a name: “surprise bills.” They are real and they are scary.
Often after an insured patient uses an emergency or urgent care facility, they receive a “surprise bill” for services or doctor’s care that have been denied by their insurance carrier.
These might be lab tests or emergency room doctors that the patient has no control over but is surprised by being billed and expected to pay.
Our elected officials need to take a serious look at this because patients are paying huge premiums, co-pays and deductibles. There must be a way for the very prosperous insurance companies and doctors to negotiate something that does not involve the patient. An independent review or dispute resolution board should solve these problems through arbitration or negotiation. Patients simply cannot afford any more health care surprises!
