Editor, Casa Grande Dispatch:
Sen. Mitch McConnell recently rolled out a “socialism” vs. “capitalism” scare to support a Trump victory in 2020. McConnell declared himself the “Grim Reaper” of socialistic policies. In 2008 he had no problem with socialism as he voted for the government bailout of Wall Street and the big banks and helped save the wealthiest capitalists from the consequences of their own greed and excess. Millions of hardworking Americans lost their homes, jobs and savings in the Great Recession of 2008, brought about, not by Democratic socialism, but by national Republican leadership and deregulated capitalism.
Recently, Trump’s imposition of government control on the free market through tariffs damaged the American farm industry. He then tried to cover his inept action by bailing out the industry with a government handout of tens of billions of dollars. Trump and McConnell have no problem with socialism — as long as it is Republican socialism. Their problem is with Democratic socialism.
Both Republican and Democratic socialism are based on government control of the economy and taxpayer handouts. The difference is in who benefits — corporations and the super wealthy or ordinary working Americans.
Our choice in 2020 is between the Republican socialism with unregulated capitalism that gave us the Great Depression of 1929, the Great Recession of 2008 and the huge economic inequality of today, or Democratic socialism with regulated capitalism, which reversed both economic disasters in the past, saved the American economy twice and promises to narrow the inequality gap today so that all Americans, not just the few, benefit from national economic policies in the future.
