Editor, Casa Grande Dispatch:
This week it was announced that a prominent Arizona woman, Barbara Barrett, is the nominee to be secretary of the Air Force, and I think that is great news for all of Arizona.
She has an enormous and varied background including vice chairman of the Civil Aeronautics Board and civilian adviser to the secretary of defense and ambassador to Finland. She was the first woman to land an F/A-18 Hornet on an aircraft carrier.
Arizona has many military installations around the state and while there is not one in the Casa Grande area, the whole state prospers greatly because of all the military activity here. We also have many active military reserves and retirees living here who have big interests in the state of military activities. Luke AFB is home to the F-35 fighter jet and has increasing and on-going activity that enhances the economy of the area
We have much to be proud of in Arizona and having a secretary of the Air Force who lives here is almost an assurance that we will be leading the way of national security for a long time.
