Editor, Casa Grande Dispatch:

It was really nice to read in the Dispatch that our hometown Lucid Air won the MotorTrend Car of the Year. As most know by now, that car is being built right here in Arizona. And they are not alone. We have seen other of the start-up electric vehicle companies locating here in Arizona, and it is becoming an important part of our economy, providing us with good-paying jobs in an industry that is poised to explode in the upcoming years.

Sadly, as it is written now, the Build Back Better bill could bring this to a halt here in Arizona. There is a provision to put an additional $4,500 tax credit for the purchase of an electric vehicle (good idea) in the bill, but limit it only to the vehicles built in U.S. union plants (bad idea). This limiting provision will cut out 90% of the models available in the U.S. from the tax credit, and all of the ones being built here in Arizona. This will have the effect of urging consumers to buy the five cars that qualify for the credit.

Congress should not be making policy that discourages innovation and competition. I hope Sen. Sinema and the rest of the delegation work to remove this provision that will have lasting repercussions here in Arizona, and in the end will have a chilling effect on the electric vehicle industry moving forward.
