Editor, Casa Grande Dispatch:

Jeff Guldner, the new CEO of APS and parent company Pinnacle West, has announced the end of their dumping millions of ratepayer dollars into political campaigns. While this is welcomed news, it must be looked at in context.

Since 2014 APS has invested tens of millions to make sure they got regulators elected to the Arizona Corporation Commission who will obediently turn a blind eye to corruption and unmitigated profiteering. These bought and paid for regulators have co-signed higher than warranted rate hikes and hindered the expansion of renewable energy use across Arizona. In order to drive up profits for shareholders and exorbitant CEO pay raises, ratepayers have been lied to and cheated over and over again.

The only reason any of the corruption associated with the regulators has come to light is that in 2018 Arizona elected a Democrat to the Corporation Commission, Sandra Kennedy. Her work to protect citizens while holding APS and other state enterprises accountable has been monumental. There is no question that Commissioner Kennedy’s work led to the change of heart at APS.

The 2020 election offers Arizona voters a unique opportunity to further the cause of integrity and accountability in regulating our state’s public utilities. If one honest and hardworking regulator has already made a difference, imagine what electing another would do. For that reason, I ask that you elect William "Bill" Mundell to the Arizona Corporation Commission.

Mr. Mundell’s experience is truly amazing. He chaired the state Legislature’s Environmental Committee. When he served on the commission he became known as the Father of Solar Energy in Arizona. I encourage you to find out more and join me in supporting a move to a more ethical and citizen-focused Arizona Corporation Commission.
