A growing number of Democrats in the House of Representatives are calling for the process to impeach Donald Trump to begin. Speaker Nancy Pelosi is doing her best to hold off the impeachment process. What does the impeachment process involve and what is the history of presidential impeachments?

The House impeachment of a president is analogous to a grand jury issuing an indictment. The trial which could result in the removal of the president is held in the Senate with the Chief Justice presiding. It takes two-thirds (currently at least 67 votes) of the Senate to vote for the president to be removed from office. Thus, at least 20 Republican senators would have to join 45 Democrats and two Independents voting for removal, and that is highly unlikely.

Two presidents, Andrew Johnson and Bill Clinton, were impeached by the House and both were acquitted by the Senate. Richard Nixon was never impeached since he resigned before a vote was taken in the full House. Was there one Democrat in the Senate who believed that Clinton did not commit perjury? No, they voted to acquit since his untruth under oath was about an inappropriate affair and was not a high crime and misdemeanor required by the Constitution.

Senate Republicans will vote to acquit since there is no proof that Donald Trump conspired with Russian operatives, and his actions deemed to be obstruction of justice can be seen as an inexperienced president exercising his executive powers. Why impeach if the result will be certain acquittal? Some Democrats want to impeach due to the president’s racism. He is not a racist, he is a Trumpist who says and does what he believes will help him realize his goals without regard for truth, history or morality.

In September 2016, this column stated, “Despite his supporters denying it, Trump is an egotistical, thin-skinned demagogue, who understands what is disturbing many Americans. I cannot believe that he is capable of solving their problems. His business successes have been in Manhattan real estate. … Most of the rest of his businesses failed, leaving a trail of unpaid bills, law suits and creditors holding worthless paper. He says something outrageous then says he did not say that, then indicates that he was misunderstood. If this happened occasionally, one could forgive him. But whether it was stopping Muslim admission to the U.S., Megan Kelly, Carly Fiorina, a ‘Mexican’ judge, or the mother of a Muslim American soldier killed in combat saving his troops, Trump has consistently backpedaled.”

If you want to see the president removed, do not waste time impeaching, simply motivate citizens to vote for the Democrat in 2020.
