“Profiles in Courage” was a book published in 1956 that related the courage of eight U.S. Senators who defied their political party and acted in a way that was best for the American people. If a similar book was written today about the action of current senators, it would be entitled, “Profiles in Incompetence and Cowardice.” During the attempt to impeach President Trump, Democrats have appeared to be incompetent, while many Republicans have acted in a cowardly manner. While this was happening, the nation’s business was not being addressed.

As Republicans have noted, Democrats sought to remove the president from office starting with the day he was elected. Although a few Democrats believed his election was illegitimate, most of them simply felt that he was unfit to be president. It should be noted that this complaint simply echoed what Republicans seeking the 2016 nomination had said about Donald Trump. The verdict of incompetence is derived from the fact that the entire impeachment plan did not take advantage of Democratic senators who have held senior prosecutorial position.

Richard Blumenthal (Conn.), Kamala Harris (Calif.), and Sheldon Whitehouse (R.I.) were all their state’s attorney general, and Whitehouse was also U.S. Attorney for RI. Amy Klobuchar (Minn.) and Patrick Leahy (Vt.) were county attorneys. And all five know that you do not indict a person unless you have confidence in obtaining a guilty verdict.

Nancy Pelosi knew from the start that a guilty verdict was unlikely, yet these five did not educate their Congressional brethren to appreciate correct prosecution. This is total incompetence.

Meanwhile, when Republican senators were confronted with improper behavior by the president, they found excuses or denied that there was anything wrong in the president’s behavior. Senator Lindsey Graham (S.C.), who had expressed concern for the Russian invasion of Eastern Ukraine and the annexation of Crimea, was silent as the president’s withholding of needed military aid was revealed. Senator John Kennedy (La.) twisted himself into a pretzel attempting to explain his stated belief that Ukraine had interfered in our election.

The actions of these two senators was not much different than most Republican senators, yet it was most unexpected given their past honesty. Why are Republicans acting so cowardly? It seems they value re-election rather that serving this nation and the president has the power to deny them re-election.

Every senator takes an oath to support and defend our Constitution. The incompetence and cowardice displayed in the Senate is in violation of that oath. Does a sacred oath have no meaning?
