GILBERT — Richard Chester "Rick" Jahns, 74, formerly a member of the Casa Grande City Council, died peacefully on Dec. 7, 2020, in Gilbert.
Mr. Jahns was born on Nov. 20, 1946, in Spring Valley, Minnesota, to Chester and Dorothy Jahns. He was a 1964 graduate of Albert Lea High School and attended Northwestern University. He earned a Bachelor of Science degree at Mankato State University. He was married to his high school sweetheart, Dodi (Dorothy) Barrus, for 53 years. Following his graduation from college, he joined the Marine Corps. He moved to Casa Grande to assume the position of assistant to the city manager.
In 1973 he joined Allstate Insurance Company as an agent for life and casualty. He was known for being honest, trustworthy and gregarious. He was an eternal optimist and was dedicated to his many policyholders and their families. He liked serving his community and was elected to a four-year term on the Casa Grande City Council. He loved his family and almost always put their needs first. He deeply loved people, and rock 'n' roll was his favorite music. An Eagles concert was his first and favorite concert and he also saw The Rolling Stones, Bob Seger, U2, Steppenwolf and many more. He was a huge fan of live theater. He followed his dreams and encouraged others to do the same.
He was predeceased by a son, Kenneth R. Jahns; a brother, Daniel Jahns; and a sister, Kathleen Popp. Surviving in addition to his wife are a daughter, Juli Queen; a brother, Tom Jahns; a sister, Marlene Nelson; and two grandchildren.
The celebration of life service was at 2 p.m. on Dec. 21 at Valley of the Sun Mortuary in Chandler, with Pastor Brett Humphrey of Sun Valley Community Church in Gilbert officiating. Interment was in Valley of the Sun Cemetery.
