CASA GRANDE — Ramon M. Villanueva Sr., 96, of Casa Grande, a decorated World War II veteran, died peacefully in his home on April 22, 2021.
Mr. Villanueva was a son of Manuel and Maria Villanueva. He was a proud veteran of the Army's 82nd Airborne Division and fought in Normandy and the Battle of the Bulge, receiving the Combat Infantry Badge and the Bronze Star Medal for his heroic and meritorious service.
He was a member of Casa Grande Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1677 and American Legion Post 8. During a career, he worked as a smokejumper in the Alaska Fire Service and U.S. Bureau of Land Management, protecting federal, state and private lands in Alaska. He was loved and admired by family and friends and enjoyed his beloved dog, Sam Sam.
He was preceded in death by three siblings, Basilio Villanueva, Guadalupe Fuentes and Anita Mercado. He is survived by his wife, Soledad; 11 sons and daughters, Roman Villanueva of California, Silvia Villanueva of New York, Reyes Villanueva of Tucson, Sabrina Villanueva, Susan Villanueva, Sonia Villanueva, Raymundo Villanueva, Reuel Villanueva, Rene Villanueva, Ramon Villanueva Jr. and Sonia Corral, whom he raised as his own, all of Casa Grande; a sister, Elidia Trevino of Texas; 36 grandchildren; 49 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.
Rosary recited at 9:30 a.m. on Wednesday, April 28, at St. Anthony of Padua Catholic Church, with funeral Mass celebrated at 10. Graveside service in Mountain View Cemetery.
