MESA — Arlene J. Ratz, 87, died on Oct. 23, 2019, in Phoenix.
Mrs. Ratz was born on Feb. 4, 1932, in Jamestown, North Dakota, the middle of three children of Arthur and Gudrun Lee. She attended Jamestown College and received a bachelor’s degree in music in 1954. She received a Master of Arts degree in music from Eastern New Mexico University in 1961 and a Master of Arts degree in counseling from Austin College in Texas in 1968.
She taught piano at Central Arizona College from 1969 until 2016, when she was almost age 85. She and her husband Donald, who taught art and design, were part of CAC’s original faculty. She tirelessly produced her own piano methods book, revising it annually to better assist her students’ understanding and enjoyment of piano and music. She also taught piano privately for many years and worked at ABC TV in New York City and as a high school counselor in Virginia. She was much loved and appreciated for the help, encouragement and good cheer she shared with her students, friends and family.
She is survived by a daughter and son, Cheryl Eikenberry of Mesa and Jim Ratz Lee of Salt Lake City, and three grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband.
