LAVEEN — The Maricopa wrestling team had a successful run at the Division II Section III tournament Saturday, qualifying nine athletes for the state tournament this weekend.

The Rams had three sectional champions and qualified six others at the tournament held at Betty Fairfax High School.

Zachary Kondravy at 152 pounds, Hunter Taylor at heavyweight, and girls wrestler Ryleigh Westerfield at 185 pounds all won first place.

“We did the best we have ever done since I started coaching,” Maricopa coach Erick Fierro said in an email. “I am very proud of what our athletes have accomplished this year.”

Cody Long (160) took second place for the Rams; Gabriel Garcia (113) and Angelo Romero (120) finished third; and Xavier Rose (106), Nicolas Mooney (170) and Quintone Green placed fourth.

The Division II state wrestling tournament will be held Thursday and Friday at Findlay Toyota Center in Prescott Valley.
