MARICOPA — The Maricopa swim team wasted no time making waves in the pool.

During Thursday’s home meet at Copper Sky, the first competition of the season, the Rams broke 12 school records while dominating almost every event against Mesquite and North high schools. In fact, the boys won every event, while the first won nine of 11. The final scores for the boys were Maricopa 141, Mesquite 87 and North 24. For the girls, it was Maricopa 139, Mesquite 119 and North 24.

On the boys’ side, Nolan Ford and Connor Schrader both broke two individual school records — the former in the 200-yard individual medley and the 100-yard breast stroke, and the latter in the 100-yard butterfly and the 100-yard backstroke.

The two were joined by Santiago Moreno and Luis Quiroz-Sanches to break the school record in the 200-yard medley relay, and by Quiroz-Sanchez and Benjamin Hames for the record in the 200-yard freestyle relay.

Hames also won the 200-yard and 500-yard freestyle events, while Sanchez-Quiroz took first in the 50-yard and 100-yard freestyle.

For the girls, Sidney Stolle broke the school records in the 200-yard individual medley and the 100-yard backstroke, and Rachel Grubbs now has the school record for the 500-yard freestyle.

Stolle, Grubbs, Katelyn Owens and Dorianne Games also broke the school record for the 200-yard medley relay. Then, Stolle, Owens, Dorianne Hames and Mackenzie Fair accomplished the same feat in the 200-yard freestyle relay.

Fair also won the 100-yard and 200-yard freestyle events, and Dorianne Games won the 40-yard freestyle and Katelyn Owens the 100-yard breaststroke.

The Rams next travel to the Apache Junction Aquatic Center on Thursday to compete against Eastmark and Apache Junction. Their next home meet at Copper Sky will be Sept. 16 against Casa Grande Union and Gila Ridge.
