MARICOPA — For the first time in its history, Maricopa will have swimmers at the state championship meet.
Olivia Byers and Connor Schrader both qualified under Arizona Interscholastic Association rules to be at the Division II championship meet at Mesa’s Skyline Aquatic Center. The meet begins with preliminary races on Thursday at 2:30 p.m. and concludes Friday with the finals.
Schrader will be competing in two events, as he was seeded 11th in the 100-meter backstroke and 18th in the 100 freestyle. Byers, meanwhile, is the first alternate in the 100 freestyle, being seeded 33rd with the top 32 swimming.
Both will have hopes of coming in the top 16, which will qualify them for the finals.
The swim program at MHS is in its second season, and this is the first time a member of the team has qualified for the championship.
