MARICOPA — While there’s been plenty of individual success for the Maricopa High School swim team this season, Thursday marked its highest achievement as a team.
The Rams hosted San Tan Valley Combs at Copper Sky, and both the girls and boys teams were able to come out ahead, with the boys winning by an impressive 97-57 margin.
Connor Schrader finished first in the 200-meter individual medley and the 100 butterfly, the latter of which broke the school record. He was joined at the top of the podium by Rafe Scoresby (500 freestyle) and Bryan Perez (100 backstroke).
On the girls’ side, Olivia Byers and Katelyn Owens both had two first-place finishes.
Byers won the 50 freestyle and the 100 freestyle, while Owens took the top spot in the 500 freestyle and the 100 breaststroke.
Aubree Wittemann also won in the 200 freestyle.
What really bode well for the team is that the girls and boys each won first place for two different relay competitions. Byers, Owens, Eva Zavala and Shelbee Beecroft teamed up to win the 200 medley relay, while Wittemann replaced Beecroft as the girls won the 200 freestyle relay.
Schrader. Scoresby, Andrew Varga and Kian Caroll won the boys 200 freestyle relay, while Scoresby, Varga, Perez and Jayden Call won the 400 freestyle relay.
Maricopa will again host a meet this coming Thursday, this time against Benjamin Franklin and Tempe at 4 p.m. at Copper Sky.
