MARICOPA — Five juveniles were involved in an incident the night of Jan. 13 in Maricopa that reportedly involved shots fired and a crashed car.

According to the Maricopa Police Department, during a candlelight vigil being held in the parking lot of Copper Sky Regional Park, multiple juveniles were reported to be firing guns into the air but not at anyone.

Following the gunfire, five juveniles reportedly fled the scene in two different cars, with one in one car and four in the other. The driver of the car with four people appeared to have lost control and struck a tree at Bowlin and Greythorn roads.

Following the crash, where there were no apparent injuries, the four juveniles fled the scene and got into the other car. However, police were quickly able to locate both cars and all individuals involved. Upon searching the vehicles, officers reportedly discovered a handgun, cartridge casings, drugs and drug paraphernalia.

The juveniles were questioned and released to their families, but there could still be criminal charges following. The investigation is ongoing.

“The Maricopa Police Department takes this dangerous activity seriously and would urge anyone with any additional information or video to please contact the Maricopa Police Department non-emergency line at 520-568-3673,” said an MPD press release.
