MARICOPA — A dog that served the Maricopa Police force for 11 years has died of heat-related causes.
Chief Steve Stahl announced on June 29 in a YouTube video that Ike the K-9 died early the previous Saturday morning after being treated by veterinary personnel since the incident occurred that Friday evening.
Stahl said the Arizona Department of Public Safety will be assisting the Maricopa Police Department in investigating the incident in order to ensure full transparency. He said no other information is available at this time, but it will be shared when the investigation becomes available.
A memorial service for Ike held at a later date due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
“Many of you have come to know him quite well,” Stahl said. “We ask for your continued support and prayers for the handler, the community and our officers, as this loss impacts all greatly.”
