MARICOPA — Just after 1 a.m. Sept. 14, a fire broke out in a home on West Helen Court — the second residential fire in just a week. Maricopa fire crews were immediately dispatched to fight the flames.

Firefighters on-scene battled the flames from inside the home while one firefighter, John Barr, managed to rescue a puppy from the blaze.

A man inside the home suffered burns to his lower extremities and smoke inhalation injuries in the fire. He had been awake when the fire started, and the other residents, a woman and child, awoke to the smoke detector activation shortly after. All three fled the home before firefighters arrived.

The man was transported to the Arizona Burn Center in Phoenix via ambulance and Maricopa Fire paramedics rode with him to provide care.

The home was charred in the fire and is currently unable to be occupied. Chris Bolinger, spokesperson for MFD, said the residents had been in contact with the city’s victim services program.

The cause of the fire has since been ruled accidental.
