MARICOPA — An elementary school student was hospitalized "out of an abundance of caution" after being struck by an SUV while riding a scooter near Sequoia Pathway Academy.
According to the Maricopa Police Department, the elementary school-aged child was riding an electric scooter near the school when it was struck "at low impact" by an SUV trying to turn right onto Porter Road.
The child was then taken to Banner Children's at Desert Hospital for examination, though it did not appear to officers that there were significant injuries.
The driver of the SUV remained on scene and was cooperating with the investigation.
"MPD would like to remind both drivers and cyclists to stay aware of their surroundings and always double-check for on-coming traffic," the MPD release said. "It is also important for scooter operators or bike riders to have adequate safety equipment such as a properly fitting helmet and visible lights or reflective clothing."
