MARICOPA — A man was ejected from his vehicle in a crash at Farrell Road and State Route 347 on May 18.
The wreck happened around 5:30 p.m. and involved two pickup trucks that apparently were involved a rear-end collision.
Lee Morano, a 20-year former EMT, arrived just after the vehicles collided. He immediately stopped his vehicle to render aid, first running into the ditch where one of the pickups had landed. When he realized it was empty, he looked back toward the road.
“I turned around, and that’s when I saw the guy laying in the middle of the road,” Morano said. “I just checked for vitals and tried to see if the guy would wake up at all, but he wouldn’t.”
Morano said the man’s condition was critical, and he was taken by ambulance to a hospital. The driver of the other vehicle was “pretty banged up” but otherwise OK.
The seat from the vehicle the man was ejected from was still in the road.
A nine-year Maricopa resident, Morano says stopping to help is just a part of who he is.
“It’s just in my blood after all those years in an ambulance, I always stop to help,” Morano said.
