MARICOPA — Details released by state troopers provide a clearer picture of a head-on collision that caused multiple injuries and led to one arrest on State Route 347 on Jan. 24.
It all started at 5 a.m. that Friday when 21-year-old Jessica Garcia apparently ran out of gas in the No. 2 southbound lane of State Route 347 at mile marker 175, shown on Arizona Department of Transportation maps as being just north of the Smith-Enke Road and SR 347 intersection. Lanes are given numbers from left to right.
According to the Department of Public Safety, a red Chevrolet sedan was traveling in the No. 2 lane when it collided with the rear end of Garcia’s Land Rover. The red Chevy then traveled through the gravel median and collided head-on with an oncoming white Hyundai sedan in the No. 1 northbound lane of SR 347. A white Chevrolet traveling behind the white Hyundai then hit the left side of the red Chevy.
The driver of the red Chevy and the driver of the white Hyundai were both transported via ambulance with critical injuries, while the driver of the white Chevy sustained minor injuries and declined transport.
Garcia, a Tolleson resident, was not injured in the collision and refused medical treatment. She was then arrested and booked for two counts of simple assault, DUI - alcohol, DUI - drug and endangerment.
