STANFIELD -- A wind gust may have blown over a semi tractor-trailer on Interstate 8 in Pinal County Tuesday.

The Department of Public Safety said the eastbound commercial rig rolled over into the median at 4:44 p.m. near milepost 161 on I-8 near Stanfield Road dumping its load.

A tractor trailer rig rolled over into the median about 5p.m. Tuesday on Interstate 8 near Stanfield Road. The driver, who crawled out of the semi, was flown to St. Joseph's Hospital in Phoenix for a head injury. Regional Fire & Rescue Fire Chief Steven Kerber reported that the driver said wind blew him over.

The Arizona Department of Transportation reports that the freeway was closed in both directions briefly to allow for the helicopter to land and take off safely in evacuating the injured driver.

DPS said Wednesday morning the cause of the accident is still being investigated. The National Weather Service reported blowing dust in the area at the time of the accident.

No other injuries were reported and no other vehicles were involved in the incident.
