MARICOPA — A construction crew member working near Casa Blanca Road along State Route 347 was hit and killed by a motorist late Wednesday night, according to Gila River Police.
The accident happened at 9:20 p.m. as the employee was working on a road resurfacing project as part of a crew in a designated construction zone. A vehicle traveling north on SR 347 struck the construction worker and did not stop to render aid. The auto was later identified as a small passenger vehicle by witnesses, but the driver is still at large.
The individual died as a result of the collision and was later identified as being Native American by the Gila River Police.
Northbound lanes of SR 347 were closed the rest of the evening for the investigation.
