MARICOPA — The second high school needs a name and the school district is encouraging the public to submit ideas.
The superintendent's high school naming committee needs help naming the Maricopa Unified School District's second high school and wants the entire school community to participate.
Those submitting a name to be considered should think about people, themes and places.
When considering people, they could be names of "distinguished individuals who have made outstanding contributions to the community and education." They could be people who demonstrate leadership in arts and sciences, education or public service. They could reflect the character and history of the community.
These people are either a group of persons or persons deceased at least five years.
Themed names should reflect on the historical and cultural character of the community or names characterizing fauna and flora or referencing the Indigenous.
Places should be recognized geological and historical areas or landmarks, reflect state, local or national history or be geographic points of interest.
The naming committee will review the suggested names from the public. These results won't be used as a decision-making tool or a consensus gathering.
Members of the public can contribute their ideas from Sept. 23 to Oct. 11 at noon.
