MARICOPA — The Maricopa Unified School District board approved future elementary attendance boundaries at Wednesday’s meeting.
On Dec. 7, Tracey Pastor, assistant superintendent, presented the findings of the Elementary Boundary Committee for consideration to the board after looking into capacity and enrollment projections for the schools.
For Butterfield, Santa Cruz, Saddleback and Maricopa elementary schools, if no changes were made by fiscal year 2026, the enrollment would be unbalanced. Currently, they have similar class size and capacity.
Alternative 1 focused on the Homestead neighborhood. It would have those living west of Homestead and Centennial Boulevard going to Butterfield and those to the east remaining at Santa Cruz.
Currently, 247 elementary-age students are in that grid, and 139 students would be reassigned to Butterfield and 141 students remaining at Santa Cruz.
Projected enrollment numbers for 2026-27 are 990 at Butterfield and 1,225 at Santa Cruz.
Board member AnnaMarie Knorr said she appreciated updates on this discussion along with providing the community information and the opportunity to comment on the options.
Board member Tori Anderson thanked Pastor and the committee for allowing the public a bit more time to react to the maps.
“I’m pleased with the outcome and with the service (that’s been) provided,” she said.
Alternative 2 showed Grids 25 and 28 moving to Saddleback. Currently, they have 153 students without a significant change in enrollment over the next few years in those subdivisions.
Projected enrollment for 2026-27 is 986 at Maricopa and Saddleback.
Administrators recommended Alternative 2. They believed this option moves sufficient students in the upcoming school year from Saddleback to Maricopa.
