CASA GRANDE — It’s a bit of a roller coaster ride when it comes to high school volleyball in Pinal County. Some season a lot of teams find success. Other times, not so much.

Over the past two seasons it would appear that local squads are on the rise as two teams, in Maricopa and Poston Butte, secured a play-in round postseason spot.

There’s no denying the big turnaround those two teams had this year, but there are some individual performances from the other local schools that also garnered attention to comprise the 2021 PinalCentral all-county volleyball team.

Leading the way with the top honor is Florence’s Miya Alvarado as 2021 PinalCentral Volleyball Player of the Year.

Alvarado was named the Offensive Player of the Year in the 3A South Central region and led the conference in kills with 448.

The senior was a force in the middle with a 0.28% hit percentage and was seventh in the conference in blocks with 85. An all-around dynamic athlete, Alvarado also racked up 60 aces, 16 assists and 196 digs.

The runner-up for Player of the Year goes to Haylee Brown of Maricopa. Brown is a junior outside hitter for the Rams and was named the Offensive Player of the Year for the 6A Desert Southwest region.

Unlike other local teams that played quite a few tournament games, Maricopa only participated in one and the stats listed on MaxPreps for Brown are mainly from regular season game.

While Brown only posted 91 kills, she had a 50% kill percentage and posted a 0.33% hit percentage in the Rams’ 21 games.

Rounding out the rest of the first team all-county selections are opposite hitter Alexie Orr of Florence, libero Mikelle McAfee of Casa Grande Union, defensive specialist Jamie Hoffman of Florence and setter Taylor Yon of Sequoia Pathway.

Orr is a senior for the Gophers and Hoffman is a junior, the two provided a lot of backup for Alvarado as Orr was second on the team in kills with 154. Her 82 aces served put her in third place in the 3A conference. She also posted 30 blocks and 53 digs.

As a defensive specialist, Hoffman posted 301 digs to land in the Top 10 in the conference and had 374 receptions.

McAfee, also a junior, had just 20 errors in 294 receptions for the Cougars. She posted 12 kills and 27 assists to go along with 210 digs.

Yon, a senior, racked up 88 kills for the Pumas along with 74 aces and three blocks. Her 286 assists landed her among the Top 5 in the 2A conference.
