SAN MANUEL — A homeless man is facing charges after allegedly being involved in a fight more than two months ago that led to one man being treated for a stab wound.

According to Pinal County Superior Court records, Manuel R. Duarte, 40, of San Manuel is charged with aggravated assault and trespassing.

On June 9, a Pinal County Sheriff’s deputy responded to a convenience store where Duarte allegedly told officers that he came across a fight between a friend and another man at a house in the 200 block of Webb Drive. Duarte allegedly told officers that he broke up the fight after finding out that his friend had been stabbed in the arm. He allegedly told officers that he didn’t know what the fight was about.

Duarte’s friend, who was not named in the record, was flown to Banner-University Medical Center Tucson for treatment.

The same day a deputy responded to a local medical clinic for a report of a man who had shown up with injuries to his face and neck from the same fight. The man told deputies that he had been sleeping in a home in the 200 block of Webb Drive when Duarte and his friend allegedly kicked in the door and assaulted him.

The man told deputies that he didn’t know the men were in the house until they attacked him because he is partially deaf. When he realized what was happening, he pulled a pocket knife out of his pocket and started stabbing at Duarte and his friend. The man said the two men fled.

Deputies found the front security door bent and the lock area destroyed. They also found the front door had been damaged and a shoe print on the door. Inside the home they found a mattress in the living room area that had blood on it.

Duarte was taken into custody around 5:30 a.m. on Aug. 11 in the 900 block of First Avenue. Duarte allegedly told deputies on Aug. 11 he didn’t remember much of the incident. He said he recalled walking down the street and seeing the fight and stopping it.
