FLORENCE — Tuesday morning just before sunrise, a Pinal County Sheriff’s Office detention officer was out on a run when he was struck by a vehicle on Diversion Dam Road in Florence.
The officer is currently assigned to training new academy cadets and was out on a training run with them about 6:30 a.m. when he was hit by the vehicle.
The detention officer was taken to an area hospital, where he underwent surgery to repair a laceration to his arm. One of his legs initially believed to be broken has been determined not to be, according to PCSO spokeswoman Lauren Reimer.
The officer remains in the hospital and is fully awake and talking and in great spirits as he continues to recover, according to Reimer.
The driver of the car stayed on scene and is cooperating. Neither speed nor impairment appear to be factors, she said.
The PCSO is not releasing the officer’s name and the investigation is ongoing.
