APACHE JUNCTION — An Apache Junction man is facing charges after he allegedly broke a jail telephone and spat at a detention officer.

According to Pinal County Superior Court records, Walter J. Nelson, 60, is charged with destruction or injury to a public jail, aggravated assault and disorderly conduct.

At 11:48 p.m. on Sept. 10, Apache Junction Police officers responded to a disturbance in the 200 block of North Hilton Road.

A woman at the home told officers that Nelson had allegedly come home intoxicated and was arguing with someone on the patio. When she called out to see if Nelson was OK, he started yelling and cursing at her, telling her to get out of his home. Officers noted that dispatchers told them that they heard Nelson yelling in the background of the phone call.

When officers arrived they found Nelson yelling on the front patio, saying he wanted the woman out of his home. Officers noted that he appeared to be intoxicated and was allegedly belligerent toward officers.

Officers took him into custody and transported him to the county jail in Florence. While in the jail, Nelson allegedly spat on a detention officer and broke a telephone receiver.
