FLORENCE — The first day of school is July 21 in the Florence Unified School District, and face coverings will be voluntary.

In the last few weeks of the previous school year, FUSD backed off mandatory masks, “and that’s going to be the policy moving forward,” Superintendent Chris Knutsen said. He also said more students will be attending in-person.

“We’re just excited to get kids back in school,” he said. “Last year we had about 1,800 kids who were online. This year it looks like there will be about 350 kids who are online. The majority of families want their kids to come back in-person, so we’re real excited about that.”

Vaccinated teachers and students don’t need to wear masks inside school buildings, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said Friday in relaxing its COVID-19 guidelines.

The changes come amid a national vaccination campaign in which children as young as 12 are eligible to get shots, as well as a general decline in COVID-19 hospitalizations and deaths.
