PICACHO PEAK — Three people were killed and several others injured Saturday night in a fiery two-vehicle collision on Interstate 10 near Picacho Peak, authorities said.
According to the Arizona Department of Public Safety, the fatal head-on collision occurred in the eastbound lanes of the freeway around 8 p.m. at milepost 219.
On Monday morning DPS had few details on the cause of the accident and whether or not it involved a wrong-way driver. Also, the names of the victims or how many injured were transported to area hospitals were not available. The Arizona Department of Transportation reported that the vehicles erupted in flames following the collision.
The eastbound lanes were closed for several hours during the night and into Sunday morning. Traffic was diverted at Picacho to State Route 87 to Florence and then on to State Route 79 (Pinal Pioneer Parkway) to Marana and Tucson.
DPS referred additional questions about the incident to the U.S. Border Patrol, which did not respond to an email.
