COOLIDGE — A three-vehicle collision that occurred at the intersection of State Routes 87 and 287 Thursday afternoon spurred two other collisions at the same intersection.
First responders were dispatched to the first collision at 3:14 p.m. after receiving reports of an accident with injuries involving three vehicles. Authorities said that a black Jeep was traveling east on SR 287 when it was struck by a red Camaro making a left turn onto Arizona Boulevard.
When the two vehicles collided, the Camaro also impacted a silver Kia, which was in the process of making a right turn on SR 287.
The driver of the Camaro was transported to a hospital with injuries.
The wreckage blocked traffic for drivers seeking to make a right turn onto SR 287. According to police, a semi-truck collided with a traffic signal while attempting to make a right turn at the intersection while avoiding the first collision. The signal was still receiving electricity after it was struck.
Not long after that accident, a third collision was reported when a van hit the back of a trailer being pulled by a semi-truck.
Police closed off the right turn lane at the intersection as first responders worked on getting the situation under control.
The lane was reopened after one hour. However, police indicated that an officer was still on scene monitoring the downed traffic signal until crews from the Arizona Department of Transportation arrived.
