COOLIDGE — A man attempting to flee a traffic stop conducted by investigators with a state task force led officers on a high-speed chase through Coolidge on Thursday.
The situation unfolded just after 4 p.m. when detectives with the Gang & Immigration Intelligence Team Enforcement Mission were in the process of investigating an individual, identified as James Lee Austin, 23, of Coolidge, wanted for several outstanding felony warrants and weapons violations.
According to the Arizona Department of Public Safety, detectives were surveilling Austin as he was driving along the outskirts of Coolidge, and at one point attempted a traffic stop on his vehicle. The vehicle, however, fled from investigators at a high rate of speed.
They notified the Coolidge Police Department and officers responded to assist in stopping the fleeing vehicle. Authorities indicated that because of the high rate of speed at which Austin was traveling, his vehicle sustained significant damage and eventually lost a tire during the incident.
When the vehicle became inoperable, Austin then reportedly jumped out of his car and fled on foot. He was apprehended by police following a short pursuit.
