SACATON — High winds from thunderstorms that moved through the region this weekend snapped a number of wooden power poles on the Gila River Indian Community.
State Route 587 was closed Sunday morning between Interstate 10 and Indian Route 68 due to downed power poles with lines stretching across the highway, the Arizona Department of Transportation reported. Power poles along Gilbert Road south of Hunt Highway were also downed Saturday but were not blocking traffic so the road remained open.
The National Weather Service reported winds as high as 70 mph during the two storms that moved from east to west across central Arizona Friday and Saturday nights into the early morning hours.
Blowing dust also cut down visibility during the storms but no major traffic accidents were reported.
