SACATON — A Chandler man was killed and a Casa Grande man injured when the vehicles they were driving collided on State Route 87 near Sacaton Tuesday morning.
State Route 87 was closed for several hours due to the crash.
Farther north on SR 87, the highway was closed at a second location for another crash near East Riggs Road.
Department of Public Safety Trooper and Public Information Officer Martin Sotelo said the two-vehicle fatal collision happened at approximately 5:55 a.m. at milepost 151.
A white GMC sport utility vehicle entered SR 87 from Sacaton Road directly in the path of a white Volkswagen hatchback that was traveling south on SR 87, Sotelo said. The Volkswagen hatchback struck the left side of the GMC SUV.
The driver of the GMC SUV was a 34-year-old Casa Grande man. Sotelo said he was transported to an area hospital with minor injuries. He was cited for failure to control a vehicle to avoid a collision.
The driver of the Volkswagen hatchback, 52-year-old Charles Lloyd Kittrell of Chandler, died at the scene. Kittrell was not wearing a seat belt, Sotelo said.
Both directions of the highway were reopened at 10:30 a.m., according to the Arizona Department of Transportation.
