CASA GRANDE — May is Older Americans Month, and a virtual celebration is planned to observe the occasion.
Pinal-Gila Council for Senior Citizens and ArtMobile Creative Center are joining efforts for a virtual celebration event at 11 a.m. Tuesday. The event is aimed at strengthening communities by celebrating older adults.
The theme for this year’s Older Americans Month is “Make Your Mark,” a press release from ArtMobile said.
“Around the nation, older adults make their marks every day as volunteers, employees, employers, parents, grandparents, mentors and advocates. They offer their time, talents and experience to the benefit of our communities,” the press release said.
An estimated 1 in 5 people, or 20% of the population in Pinal County, is age 65 and older, according to the press release.
As many of the area’s older adults have been in the community for decades, they add a valuable voice.
“Communities miss out on valuable voices and perspectives when older adults are left out. They are deprived of co-workers, volunteers, mentors and friends who offer new ways of thinking about, and navigating, the world as well as wisdom collected over many decades. Older adults also often serve the critical roles of family historians and keepers of a community’s memories,” the press release said.
Simple tasks such as listening to their stories, picking up their groceries or prescriptions, or making sure they have transportation to appointments are small things we can all do to help make a big difference and say “thank you” for the contributions older adults have on the community, the press release said.
The virtual event will celebrate older adults’ unique and lasting contributions to their communities — everything from sharing a story with grandchildren to leaving a legacy of community action.
