Parks and rec needs

The Parks and Recreation Division is looking for:

  • Group fitness instructors to lead energizing, fun, safe and positive classes. Those interested may call Aaron Walter at 520-421-8677, ext. 4410.
  • Special-interest class instructors. Those with a special skill, talent or hobby may call Taylor Hubbard at 520-421-8677, ext. 4550.
  • Adult softball umpires for games that are typically held on Monday and Thursday nights. Umpires earn $17.50 to $18.50 per game. For more information call 520-421-8677, ext. 4560.

Summer recreation registration

Keep the kiddos busy all summer long with fun, interactive and engaging activities such as Weird Science, Art Daze, Sports Camp and more. Registration for summer programs and swim lessons is now open! View class schedules and register at

Palm Island activities

The following special activities are offered at Palm Island Family Aquatic Park, 1115 N. Brown Ave.:

  • Free admission to Family Swim Nights is offered on Fridays from 5:15 to 7:15 p.m. Family Swim Nights are sponsored by Banner Health. Free through Aug. 2.
  • Session three of swim lessons begins July 9. Each session lasts two weeks and includes six classes. All swim lessons are 30 minutes in duration and cost $15 per participant. Scholarships are available, but recipients must register in person at 1905 N. Peart Road.

Beginners Cheer Camp

Children ages 5 to 10 will be taught a variety of dance moves in this weeklong cheer camp. Classes will begin with stretching and warmups leading into a combination of cheer basics and dance choreography. Dress code: comfortable clothing and tennis shoes. Class begins July 8, cost is $45 for CRC members and $50 for non-members.

Tumbling for Cheerleaders Camp

Children ages 8 to 15 will learn basic tumbling skills needed for cheerleading: handstands, cartwheels, round-offs, backbends and cheer jumps. Strength and flexibility exercises will also be emphasized. Class begins July 8, cost is $45 for CRC members and $50 for non-members.

Men’s Basketball League

The Men’s Basketball League plays on Wednesday evenings beginning July 17. The league consists of seven weeks with a single-elimination playoff following the regular season. Players must be 18 or older. Cost is $300 per team. Games are played at the Community Recreation Center, 1905 N. Peart Road.

Pickleball Basics for Adults

A four-week pickleball camp for adults covers the basics of the game including safety, paddle positioning, footwork, serving and rules of the game. Classes are July 9, 16, 23, 30 from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Register at or in person at the Community Recreation Center, 1905 N. Peart Road. Cost is free for Community Recreation Center members or $15 per person for nonmembers.

Family Trivia Night

Questions at Family Trivia Night will focus on Disney’s animated and Pixar films on Friday, July 12, at the Community Recreation Center, 1905 N. Peart Road. Doors open at 6:30 p.m., the game starts at 7 p.m. CRC members receive free admission, non-members pay $5 per person. The event includes pizza, drinks and raffle prizes. Come in costume or Disney-themed attire to be entered to win fun prizes! Bring your smartphone or tablet to play. Attendees must preregister to participate. Deadline to register is July 5.
