GLENDALE — The Arizona Authors Association recently awarded an honorable mention in the fiction category to “Needles Arizona” by Bill Coates, a PinalCentral columnist.

First place for fiction went to “Blood and Silver” by Vali Benson of Tucson.

“Blood and Silver” tells the story of a 12-year-old girl who has to make her own way in the wild silver boomtown of Tombstone in the 1880s.

Coates is a retired journalist and editor with PinalCentral. He continues to write columns for PinalCentral,
