PRESCOTT — The defense was a downer for the Central Arizona College baseball team in Game 2 of Tuesday’s doubleheader against host Yavapai.
The second-ranked Vaqueros committed five errors overall, and Yavapai took advantage of two of the miscues to score three unearned runs in a five-run eighth inning that sent the Roughriders to a 9-8 victory. Central (32-2, 22-2 Arizona Community College Athletic Conference) posted a 9-6 win in the seven-inning opener.
CAC owned an 8-3 lead in Game 2 after scoring six runs in the top of the fourth. Yavapai (18-13, 13-9 ACCAC) hit two home runs off reliever Shane Spencer (4-1) in the bottom of the eighth.
JD McLaughlin hit a solo homer in the first and had an RBI groundout in the fourth for the Vaqueros. The fourth-inning rally also included Vinnie LaGatta’s two-run single, RBI doubles by Preston Godfrey and Kiko Romero, and a run-scoring single by Jake Jarvis.
Godfrey and Romero both had two of Central’s eight hits.
CAC starter Tyler Woessner went seven innings, allowing four runs and seven hits. He struck out seven, walked four and hit one.
Dusty Garcia hit a pair of two-run homers for Central in Game 1, going deep in the fifth inning and again in the seventh.
McLaughlin had a two-run homer in the fifth, and Romero hit a solo home run in the fourth. Jarvis drove in two runs.
Garcia went 3 for 3, with his other hit being a double. Romero was 2 for 2 as the Vaqueros finished with eight hits.
CAC was ahead 7-2 after a four-run fifth inning. Yavapai scored four in the sixth off Central starter Hunter Omlid (8-0), who allowed six runs (four earned) and nine hits in 5 1/3 innings. Omlid struck out seven and walked one.
Drew Sommers notched his third save by keeping Yavapai scoreless for the final 1 2/3 innings. Sommers gave up one hit, struck out three, walked one and hit one.
The Vaqueros play a home doubleheader against Arizona Western (20-8, 12-6 ACCAC) on Saturday.
